Rebooting India’s IT legal framework: Budget 2023 in the age of ChatGPT

The last few years have seen technological advances that promise to disrupt the modern information technology landscape in a way not seen since the advent of cloud computing. Be it the much-hyped metaverse, the rise and fall of crypto-tokens, or the advent of generative AI tools that can produce content at blinding speeds, there has been a lot of excitement in the IT sector. Parallelly, there have significant developments in the Indian legal framework related to IT laws. There has been substantial discourse about the regulation of personal data through Indian laws, with four iterations of a personal data law being introduced (so far) and the government promising that 2023 will be the year that finally sees a standalone personal data protection law being implemented.
