Liability redefined in amended nuclear law

The SHANTI Act, 2025 replaces India’s earlier nuclear laws and opens the sector to private players while attracting foreign suppliers. It introduces graded operator liability (₹1–30 billion) under a no-fault regime and retains government support beyond caps. A key change is removing the statutory right of recourse against suppliers—now governed by contracts. While the law boosts investment prospects, concerns remain over liability limits and reduced supplier accountability.
