Gujarat amends Factories Act, 1948 in an effort to promote ease of doing business

This article is regarding the Factories (Gujarat Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, which introduces significant changes to the Factories Act, 1948, in Gujarat. The ordinance aims to boost economic activities, attract investments, and generate employment by providing greater operational flexibility to factories while ensuring worker welfare. Key changes include increasing daily working hours from 9 to 12 hours, extending spread-over hours to 12 hours, and raising the quarterly overtime limit from 75 to 125 hours. The ordinance also allows women to work night shifts (7 PM to 6 AM) with stringent safety conditions, such as proper lighting, CCTV surveillance, security guards, and transportation facilities. Employers must obtain written consent from workers for overtime and ensure compliance with the new regulations.
