The Ministry of Power, Government of India (“MoP”), on 28.06.2021, notified Electricity (Rights of Consumers) Amendment Rules, 2021 (“Amended Rules”). The Amended Rules introduce key additions and revisions to the Electricity (Rights of Consumer) Rules, 2020 (“the Rules”), which had been notified by MoP six months earlier, on 31.12.2020, exercising its powers under Section 176 of the Electricity Act, 2003.
The intent of notifying the Rules was to underscore certain rights of electricity consumers and thereby ensure a minimum standard of quality service by licensed distribution companies (“Discoms”).
