Equity Capital Markets in India: Regulatory Overview

The two main national stock exchanges in India are the Bombay Stock Exchange Limited (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE). The laws, rules, regulations and guidelines applicable to the listing of securities on both the BSE and the NSE are substantially identical and are administered by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI), India’s securities markets regulator.

The BSE and the NSE each have three trading markets:

  • Capital market (trading in equity shares).
  • Derivatives market (trading in futures and options).
  • Debt market (trading in debt securities).
