Developments in Competition Law during August 2022

In a major development, the Competition Amendment Bill, 2022 was introduced in the Lower House (Lok Sabha) of Parliament. Further, the Delhi High Court and Karnataka High Court upheld the Competition Commission of India (“CCI”) investigation against WhatsApp and Intel Corporation, in 2 (two) separate cases. In a welcome development, the much-awaited market study on taxi and cab aggregator industry was released by the CCI. Further, it dismissed the case against Asian Paints for market abuse and imposed a penalty on Global Infrastructure Partners for gun jumping. It also approved several notable combinations, including:

  • acquisition of additional voting rights of ReNew by CPPIB;
  • acquisition of minority shareholding of CitiusTech by Bain Capital group;
  • acquisition of minority shareholding of Hitachi Construction Machinery by HCJI.
