Surajkumar Shetty

Surajkumar Shetty has extensive experience in advising clients on various aspects relating to direct taxation such as M&A transactions, devising appropriate risk mitigation and litigation strategies, restructuring businesses and business transfers, drafting and negotiating agreements from an income-tax standpoint, funds taxation, etc.

He has tremendous exposure of working on various intricate issues pertaining to both, domestic and international taxation.

He has also represented domestic and foreign clients before the Indian tax authorities and assisted them in matters before the Income Tax Appellate Tribunal, High Courts and the Supreme Court of India.

He has advised clients from industries as diverse as infrastructure, funds, financial services, manufacturing and real estate.

In addition to his work, Suraj has authored articles that are published by International Tax Review, IBFD, etc. He has also co-authored chapters in books of academic importance that have been published by the Chamber of Tax Consultants, International Taxation Committee and IFA Tax Conference (2013 Compendium). He has also conducted sessions on taxation for tax professionals and law students.

He has been practicing law since 2010. Before joining JSA, he was with Khaitan & Co and Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, two of India’s premier and oldest law firms.

  • Advised on the structuring of the acquisition of business by Hindustan Unilever Ltd from GlaxoSmithKline Consumer Healthcare Ltd pursuant to a court scheme and related aspects.
  • Advised Wockhardt Ltd on structuring the sale of a part of its generic pharmaceuticals business portfolio across jurisdictions to Dr Reddy’s Laboratories as slump sale and related complex issues.
  • Advised Investcorp on its acquisition of an Indian unlisted company from promoters and multiple prior round investors.
  • Advised Emso Asset Management Ltd on setting-up of a co-branded AIF structure along with Eight Capital Management LLC.
  • Represented E*TRADE Mauritius Limited in the ‘Special Leave Petition’ filed in the Supreme Court by the Tax Department against the advance ruling on eligibility to claim benefits under India-Mauritius DTAA.
