Coordinated a cross border research study on laws relating to acid violence. We worked with firms in the UK, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Columbia and Cambodia. A comprehensive report detailing the laws in these countries and a comparative analysis of our comprehensive report was used by ASTI for their continued advocacy efforts.

We provided our inputs on Indian employment law, including minimum wages to be paid to labourers in India. This research formed part of a larger study to create a report that would be used to campaign for better employment standards and payment of wages for workers.

JSA assisted in the setting up of a charitable society for Healing Hearts India. Healing Hearts Charitable Society, is a non-profit organization with its main object to save lives of children born with congenital heart defects. This social initiative has the support of many renowned individuals such as Former First Lady of the State of Minnesota, Mary Pawlenty, and Member of Indian Parliament, Priya Dutt.
Prepared advocacy materials on human trafficking, child labour and laws relating to domestic violence. These materials will be used by Justice Ventures International(JVI) volunteers.
JSA assisted mDiagnostica to launch a software connecting patients (especially in rural areas) to doctors/specialists. mDiagnostica is a social enterprise supported by the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. JSA’s involvement included the following:

JSA is advising Nuru Energy on certain Indian law issues. Nuru Energy is a social enterprise that sought to provide an affordable and clean off-grid lighting system for the world’s poor.
Advised the Ministry of Rural Development in the implementation of projects under the PURA Scheme. Providing Urban Amenities in Rural Areas (PURA) envisages economic empowerment of villages through the provision of physical connectivity, electronic connectivity and knowledge connectivity. This scheme proposes for holistic and accelerated development of compact rural areas around a potential growth centre in a Panchayat (or group of Panchayats) to improve the quality of life to bridge, the rural-urban divide. The Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India prepared the PURA guidelines and decided to implement PURA scheme on pilot basis through Public-Private Partnership on Design, Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (the “DBFOT”) basis, with support from Department of Economic Affairs and the Asian Development Bank (through its technical assistance project–mainstreaming of PPP projects-to Government of India).
The scope of work involved structuring, tax inputs, legal assistance on risk allocation and drafting and finalising certain partnership and revenue sharing arrangements. Lastly, a partner has been mentoring the promoters on various commercial, risk assessment and other fronts for the last several years on a pro bono basis. We acted to support their initiative of combining adventure tourism with charity to generate resources and help rehabilitate the flash-flood ravaged Uttarakhand economy.
We contributed a memorandum on the use of character evidence in rape trials in India and how the law in India had changed over the years. This formed part of a larger report complied across jurisdictions and was used by BLAST to advocate for a change in the legal position in Bangladesh.
The Supreme Court of Bangladesh is currently examining the question of divorce under Hindu laws, and has invited BLAST to make amicus curiae submissions on the availability of provisions for divorce under Hindu laws in other jurisdictions. We are providing inputs for this submission by contributing research notes on the evolution of the Hindu Code Bill and the Hindu marriage laws in India as it exists today.
JSA is currently involved in assisting Earthern Life, a social venture whose vision is to create a "zero waste" world. Earthern Life trains and hires rag pickers and other low-income communities in urban India to collect, segregate and transform urban waste into sustainable products and services. JSA is assisting Earthern Life to set up a private limited company in India.
JSA acts as legal counsel to Give India. Give India is a NGO that allows one to support a cause of their choice from 250+ non-profit organizations. JSA has assisted GiveIndia in vetting and reviewing agreements to be executed by GiveIndia with their various stakeholders from time to time. JSA will also assist them in review of their internal payroll structures and provide employment advice.
We contributed to the India component of this research project on laws relating to intellectual disabilities more specifically on issues of participation of those with intellectual disabilities in government/decision making. The final report will be used by the organisation ‘Inclusion Ghana’ to campaign for legal reform in Ghana.
We assisted in structuring and putting in place a share incentive scheme. The organisation works largely with the farming community.
JSA drafted parking bye laws for regulating the parking of vehicles in Gurgaon. This pro-bono project was commissioned by Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon for enacting bye laws under Section 392 of Haryana Municipal Corporation Act 1994.
We provided advice on the advantages and disadvantages of setting up a not- for- profit Trust/ Section 25 Company/ a society for this organisation based in the US to set up an affiliate entity in India.
We contributed by answering a detailed questionnaire on laws and policies relating to age of consent in India – especially with respect to access to various services pertaining to HIV-AIDS testing/treatment/access to contraceptives etc. This research formed part of a larger study across 12 jurisdictions and will be circulated to key civil society organisations, members of Parliament, National AIDS agencies and/or relevant ministries of health, and UN agencies by SAT. SAT will liaise with key civil society organisations and UNICEF in countries to discuss the review and look for potential positive actions.
Assisted in developing their Child Protection Policy, in compliance with Indian law on child protection and prevention of abuse. The firm also assisted them with templates of agreements which they can use with their partner organisations.
