Hormuz D. Mehta


Hormuz specialises in disputes in the corporate sector with an emphasis on white collar crimes, penal laws and general corporate commercial disputes. He has recently been associated with several high-profile commercial disputes and white-collar crimes. Recently, he was involved in the quashing of a First Information Report of a CEO of a multinational bank before the Supreme Court of India.

Hormuz has extensive knowledge in corporate litigation including insolvency proceedings. He has also filed appeals before the Debt Recoveries Tribunal under the SARFAESI Act. He is currently involved with a number of commercial ad-hoc and institutional arbitrations. 

He has been a part of various investigations by government authorities on behalf of leading multinational corporations. He advises various corporations on queries raised from time to time on regulatory, cyber and security issues.

Some of his recent work includes: 

  • Involvement in an appeal in relation to a dispute arising from the Bofors scam 
  • Advising on the arrest of two shipping vessels on behalf of a bank that has a security interest over the two vessels 
  • Involved in several commercial arbitrations on behalf of an international pump manufacturer and shipping port respectively 
  • Involved in advising a client on an ongoing investigation by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence 
  • Spearheaded a hydra-headed family dispute with offshoots before arbitration, the Company Court, High Court and Sessions Court 
  • Involved in a dispute before the NCLT in relation to an asset sale of a telecom corporate and various other matters arising from the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code

Hormuz has been practising law since 2004. Before re-joining JSA, he undertook a short stint in counsel practice with counsel Mr. Aabad Ponda in the Bombay High Court. Prior to this, Hormuz was working in Dubai at the Dubai International Arbitration Centre and JSA Dubai.
