Sri Dayanidhi Maran, Minister for Communications and Information Technology in his speech at inaugural session of India Telecom, 2006 has declared 2007 as the year of Broadband. Announcing that Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) would upgrade all its existing broadband subscribers with 256 kbps speed to 2 Mbps, he called upon the private operators to come forward and match the speed of 2 Mbps.
